Regeneration funding from Yorkshire Forward, Yorkshire's Regional Development Agency
, offered five market towns of the Upper Calder valley the chance to create a new future for themselves. Local people have been closely involved in this process. At the outset they were invited to attend a series of all day ‘action planning' town workshops. These included trips around the local area, exploration of strategic options and planning sessions. The public have since been kept closely involved. Since December 2002 the process has involved over 2,000 people and generated over 10,000 hours of community planning
