National targets for housing

• The 1997-2010 government set a target to build 2 million homes by 2016 and 3 million by 2020 to high quality standards with all new homes being carbon neutral by 2016
• This included a target to build 70,000 more affordable homes per year (including 25,000 for shared ownership / shared equity and 45,000 new social homes by 2010-2011)
